The human side of your business transition is too important to leave to lawyers and accountants.

Business transition consulting for values-led founders. Based in Coffs Harbour, working across Australia.

As a strategic leadership coach and business consultant I specialise in helping seasoned business leaders transition themselves and their businesses to the next phase and repurpose their lives.

Kathryn Brewer

“Whether you are planning retirement in five or ten years time or are already halfway out the door, I help you design and execute the next chapter so it is the best one yet.”

“A founder I worked with had built a strong, loyal team over two decades. As he prepared to sell, his biggest fear was not the price — it was what would happen to his people. We spent six months restructuring his HR documentation, designing staff communication through each stage of the sale, and coaching him personally through the identity shift of letting go. The business sold above valuation. Every key staff member stayed through settlement. He retired knowing he had done right by everyone.”

What I Do

I come in when the human architecture of your business needs expert attention. Most business advisors focus on the numbers. The lawyers handle the contracts. The accountants handle the books. I focus on the people — your culture, your communication, your staff — during a period of significant change.

What this looks like

  • Staff communication strategies that reduce uncertainty and retain your best people
  • HR and quality assurance that protects your sale price
  • Process and systems work that makes the business legible to a buyer
  • Leadership coaching through the personal transition that follows a sale
  • Operational and communications infrastructure for early stage founders building something that works for people as well as commercially

I am not a lawyer. I am not an accountant. I am the person who makes sure the human side of your transition does not become a liability.

Why Kathryn Brewer

I bring an unusual combination to this work. ICF-credentialed coach (PCC level). Adult educator with deep experience in how people learn and resist change. Operational consultant with real business management experience across corporate, startup and not-for-profit contexts. And someone who has navigated significant personal transition — which means I understand what your people are actually feeling, not just what the process requires.

I have worked across cultures and contexts — from corporate boardrooms to Indigenous communities in Central Australia, from the UK to China to coastal NSW. That breadth gives me pattern recognition most consultants do not have. I understand how people communicate under pressure, how they resist change, and how to design processes that actually hold.

Let’s Talk

If you are a founder preparing for sale, navigating growth, or simply trying to build something that works for everyone — I would like to hear about it. The first conversation is always free and confidential.

Who I Work With

  • Founders preparing a business for sale who want the process to reflect their values — not just maximise the number
  • Early stage founders who need operational and communications infrastructure built properly from the ground up
  • Leaders navigating the personal identity shift that comes when the business you have built is no longer yours

FAQ’s

Q: What does a business transition consultant actually do?

A: I work on the human architecture of your business during a period of significant change — whether that is a sale, a restructure, or rapid growth. That means staff communication strategies, HR and cultural documentation, process and systems work, and leadership coaching through the personal transition. I fill the gap between what your lawyers and accountants handle and what actually determines whether your people stay, perform and trust the process.

Q: How is this different from hiring an HR consultant?

A: A traditional HR consultant focuses on compliance and process. I focus on the human dynamics that either protect or undermine your business value during transition — culture, communication, staff retention, and the founder’s own identity through the change. It is operational and strategic, not administrative.

Q: Do I need this if I already have a business broker?

A: A business broker manages the transaction. I manage the people inside it. They are complementary, not overlapping. In fact, brokers often recommend this kind of support because staff instability and poor communication during a sale process are among the most common reasons deals fall through or valuations drop.

Q: How do you work — and what does it cost?

A: I work remotely across Australia, typically two to three days a week per engagement. Every situation is different, so I work on a scoped project or retained advisory basis rather than hourly sessions. The first conversation is always free and confidential — get in touch to discuss what you need.

Q: I am not selling my business — I am building one. Can you still help?

A: Yes. The same skills that help a founder exit well — clear communication, solid HR foundations, process and systems that scale — are exactly what an early stage business needs to build on. If you are a founder who wants to build something that works for people as well as commercially, let’s talk.
